Firecrackers ❌, News ✅

Good Morning,
Welcome! I hope you have your “Subah Kee Chai” ready and are excited to read your weekly 10-minute digest.
It's Diwali time! If somebody ever asks you when is a good time to visit India, the answer is right now. Roads lit up, buildings decorated, everyone wearing new clothes and of course, sweets! The Festival of Lights is underway and our country has come alive!
Looking to add to our celebrations, India is almost certain to play New Zealand in the ICC Cricket World Cup semi-finals in Mumbai. If we win the game, and I hope we do, no ban from any court can stop the enthusiastic fans from blasting crackers and decorating Mumbai's Skyline at night. What a sight to see!
Make sure to stay till the end of today's newsletter to read all about this week's handpicked news.

Delhi's artificial rain.

In a proactive move to combat the ongoing air pollution crisis, the government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi unveiled plans on Wednesday (Nov 8) for artificial rain in the city. This groundbreaking initiative, backed by a detailed plan from the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur, is set to make a significant impact by reducing pollution levels and enhancing the overall air quality in the region.Following a crucial meeting between scientists from IIT Kanpur and ministers of the Delhi government, there is a concerted effort to put the plan into action. The pollution crisis in the Indian capital has escalated to alarming levels, with the Air Quality Index surpassing the Very Poor category, posing health risks to millions in northern India.
Fireworks banned ❌

On November 7, India's Supreme Court provided clarification on its directive to ban firecrackers nationwide. The Court clarified that the ban on the use of firecrackers, specifically those containing barium and other prohibited chemicals, extends across the entire country and is not limited to the National Capital Region.
This clarification was issued by a bench consisting of Justices A S Bopanna and M M Sundresh during the hearing of an application seeking directions to the Rajasthan government to comply with the Supreme Court's order regarding barium crackers and to reduce air and noise pollution. In addition to the nationwide ban, the Supreme Court further prohibited the sale and manufacture of 'joined crackers'—long rows of interconnected crackers. The court emphasized that the use of barium salts in firecrackers is not allowed and mandated that the noise levels produced by firecrackers must adhere to permissible limits. This comprehensive approach underscores the court's commitment to addressing both chemical composition and noise pollution concerns associated with firecrackers.
