Virus strikes again!

India is currently facing a rare outbreak of the Nipah virus, a highly dangerous disease known for its high mortality rate. The Nipah virus is a zoonotic pathogen primarily carried by fruit bats. Humans can contract it through:

  1. Direct contact with infected animals, especially bats and pigs, via their bodily fluids.

  2. Consuming contaminated food, like fruits or date palm sap tainted with bat saliva or urine.

  3. Human-to-human transmission, especially in close settings like hospitals.

Symptoms vary from mild flu-like signs to severe, often fatal, encephalitis. Swift containment measures are essential due to its high mortality rate. The Nipah virus, named after the village where it was first identified, causes severe fever and has a high mortality rate. Although Nipah outbreaks are infrequent, the World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized it, along with diseases like Ebola, Zika, and COVID-19, as deserving of priority research due to its potential to trigger a global epidemic.Stay safe out there!

G20 Summit overview.

Although the event took place last week, I had to mention it in this edition due to the significance it holds. During the G20 Leader's Summit in New Delhi, a historic moment unfolded with the adoption of the New Delhi Declaration. Notably, all 83 paragraphs of the declaration received unanimous approval, including China and Russia, and it contained no footnotes or Chair's Summary. This comprehensive declaration included 112 outcomes, a significant increase compared to previous declarations. The Global Biofuels Alliance was launched, with Brazil, India, and the United States taking the lead.

Another significant development was the announcement of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEE EC), aimed at enhancing economic connectivity between Asia, West Asia/Middle East, and Europe. This corridor comprises two segments: the East Corridor connecting India to West Asia/Middle East and the Northern Corridor connecting West Asia/Middle East to Europe, including a new rail line.

Furthermore, the G20 Summit saw the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member, a historic step welcomed by PM Modi. India has been on the move, and the summit was yet another success for the country!

The moon, the sun, and now the ocean 🤯

India is embarking on a

This endeavour is driven by the desire to delve into the enigmatic depths of the ocean and conduct a comprehensive assessment of biodiversity in these uncharted waters.

'This development called 'Samudrayaan' closely follows India's recent achievements, including the successful landing of a spacecraft near the moon's south pole, signifying the nation's expanding aspirations as a prominent global player in science and technology. This endeavour extends India's pursuits beyond the realms of space exploration, exemplified by initiatives like the Aditya L1 mission to study the sun. The project is poised to transform India's capabilities in deep-sea exploration and advance its prowess in scientific research.

As per Rijiju, India's Earth Sciences Minister, the mission is set to dispatch a team of three explorers to an astonishing depth of six kilometres, which is roughly equivalent to four miles beneath the ocean's surface.
